Our guest this week on The Secrets to Winning is Amanda Scarborough, ESPN Lead Softball Analyst and a former All-American Pitcher at Texas A & M. If you turn on ESPN and college softball game is taking place, there is a very good chance you are listening to Amanda.
Scarborough began her ESPN commentating career during the 2009 Super Regionals, and her role has expanded to include regular season, conference championships and studio programming. In 2015, she began providing analysis for the Women’s College World Series, and is a staple in Oklahoma City during the biggest event in softball.
Every player is going to be different. As a coach, you have to know their mannerisms, how to talk to them, and find a way to get more out of each player.
As a player, Scarborough excelled at Texas A&M and was the first student-athlete in Big 12 history to receive the Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year award in the same season (2005). In 2007, she was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and a finalist for National Player of the Year. Scarborough was also a finalist for National Player of the Year in 2005. While at Texas A&M her team made two Women’s College World Series appearances, and in 2014, she was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame.
She provides tremendous insight from both a player’s perspective and from the analyst’s booth on the competitive mindset of today’s collegiate athletes, overcoming challenges you are faced with, and how to succeed no matter the circumstances.
